TSAS held a workshop on November 10th, 2012 in Ottawa. The workshop on “The Social Conditions and Process of Radicalization” was a one-day event designed to piggy-back on the Kanishka Project opening conference run by Public Safety Canada. Over 55 people participated in a day of research presentations and discussion focused on the study of the process of radicalization leading to terrorist violence. In line with one of the core objectives of TSAS, the participants were made up of academics and people working for the government of Canada in areas of policy and research related to terrorism and security issues. Government participants came from many agencies, ranging from the RCMP to the Ministry of Justice and the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal. Representatives from Chatham House in the UK and the International Centre for Counter-Terrorism in the Netherlands were present as well.
Atelier sur le Terrorisme : Les Conditions Sociales et les Processus de Radicalisation
Organisé par le Canadian Network for Research on Terrorism, Security and Society (TSAS), cet atelier d’une journée s’est tenu à Ottawa à la suite de la conférence d’ouverture de deux jours du Projet Kanishka de Sécurité publique Canada. Le but de l’atelier était d’examiner différentes approches et méthodologies pour étudier les conditions sociales et les processus de radicalisation terroriste. Un objectif parallèle était de favoriser les connexions entre les silos disciplinaires en milieu universitaire ainsi qu’entre les chercheurs universitaires et les professionnels de la politique. Après de brefs commentaires liminaires, la première moitié de l’atelier a exploré un aperçu de la psychologie sociale expérimentale dans le processus de radicalisation. La deuxième moitié de l’atelier a abordé les conditions sociales les plus favorables à la radicalisation, et le rôle de la religion dans le processus de radicalisation. L’atelier s’est terminé par une brève discussion ouverte.
