Nico Saunders

Junior Affiliate (PhD)

Nico is currently a PhD student at the University of Waterloo, the Balsillie School of International Affairs, in the conflict and security cluster.
Her research aims at evaluating how social perspectives on national security influence ‘community’ conflict prevention strategies. Prevention strategies tend focus on “local solutions to local problems”, however it is viewed that national/global risks are actualized when there are local, personal grievances (Hiebert and Nolan, 2014; Lowndes et al., 2010; Briggs et al., 2006). Further elements of this research could evaluate the role of online communities for development of these narratives, as well as community formation.
Nico previously worked as a research assistant in the influence, intelligence and collaboration section at the Defence Research and Development Canada.
