Naomi Zakimi’s research interests focus on the way online communications facilitate radicalization and extremist conversations. For her Honours thesis she conducted a qualitative study of the Canadian section of Stormfront, a right-wing extremist online forum, and Facebook. She found that many of the extremist ideas discussed on Stormfront could also be found on Facebook.
Zakimi’s currently working on her master’s thesis under the supervision of Dr. Richard Frank, a TSAS Senior Research Affiliate at Simon Fraser University. Her master’s research will focus on identifying users’ online interests and participation patterns in right-wing extremist forums. By understanding users’ online interests, programs that aim to prevent and counter radicalization could be better targeted to suit each individual and their online behaviour.
