Nadia Hai

Junior Affiliate (PhD)

Nadia Hai is a PhD candidate in the School of Journalism and Communication at Carleton University.

Her current research will explore how the al Qaeda movement communicates with its Western audiences through online English-language news texts. In particular, how authors of these texts create a sense of shared identity with Western followers. Her Master’s thesis focused on Inspire, al Qaeda’s online English-language magazine; through a rhetorical analysis, Nadia explored the modes of persuasion employed by the authors to make the movement appealing to Western audiences.

She explores how the al Qaeda movement reaches out to different demographics. It not only explores the way terrorist movements communicate with their audiences, but also how the demographics of the movement and its followers have shifted, which in turn impacts the way the authors give meaning to the movement.
