Mariful Alam is a senior PhD candidate at York University in the Socio-Legal Studies program. His doctoral dissertation investigates the relationship between legal regimes, state surveillance, and political dissent. The study explores how juridical and security knowledge both enable and inhibit discrete surveillance practices, and assesses the role of legal and national security discourses in the construction of risky, criminal and terrorist protesters within the context of on the ground surveillance operations and in courtroom proceedings.
